So did I. Then I went back today and asked what would happen to my preorder. The Mobile Manager said they are automatically taking the white pre-orders and swapping them to black. He also told me they would be opening at the usual 10 o'clock AM. I plan on getting there around 8.

    Blonde Buddhist

    interesting.

Dammit I wanted a white one too. I'm just going to assume the one white one they've ever so far made will be available to me at my store on june 24th. Or give the black to my sister once the white one comes out. EITHER OR.

Exactly how are people going to install Apple software like Aperture or Final Cut? Or re-install the OS?

USB sticks for one. Thats how I've been re-installing the OS for a year or two.

I ended up buying an iPhone 4 ten days ago because my 3G s died (I really was hoping that my 3G s would have lasted until the iPhone 5). With this news I might look into the possibility of 'sidegrading' to the white iPhone 4.
I'm still within the 30 day return policy with Apple-I just need to see if AT&T will penalize me.

I doubt they'll penalize you if you are within your 30 days. Just tell them you aren't happy with your black iPhone and you want the white one. If they want to keep you as a customer, they'll hook you up. Did you pay for the black one? Cancel the line, get your money back then get the white one. There's always a way around the BS the phone companies try and screw us blind with...:D

I don't think it would be a surprise to anyone to hear there's a generous mark-up on Apple products. It's for the consumer to decide if that's worth paying for or not. There are market forces after all, if it was too expensive, not enough people would buy them - but that doesn't seem to be a problem they're having at the moment.

Still, they are more than the sum of their parts, other companies are free to pick those parts off the shelf and put together something the same or better than the iMac for less. None of the competitors have impressed me with their attempts so far though. I'd be interested to see the cost of the 27" IPS display as well, doesn't strike me as a bargain bucket component.

    Good post.

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8H7 Safari/6533.18.5)

My gues is there never were any issues with the paint... They knew that the iPhone 5 wasn't going to come after the regular year so they needed something to keep us happy... The white iPhone 4 seems to be the perfect happy maker (to atleast some people).... What it comes down to is that the iPhone 5 is going to have to be out of this world for people to not loose faith in it... Which isn't such a bad thing is suppose... Thoughts anyone?

Glad to see some robust competition...will only keep Apple honest and innovative.

This entire scenario is playing out like Windows / MacOS part 2 -- the vertically integrated MacOS (hardware + OS coming from same source) is beaten into obscurity by the OS that is available on a multitude of devices from many different manufacturers.

Every percentage point that Android ticks higher -- every million more Android customers that sign on due to BOGOs and heavily subsidized phones -- makes their customer base the more enticing one to develop for.

This type of competition won't keep Apple "honest and innovative" -- it'll just lead to what we saw before in the 80s and 90s: top software going to the competing platform with Apple grabbing at scraps.

    Two words: Multiple Libraries.
That's a pretty good idea. But it wouldn't require more than a trivial update to iPhoto, I would think.

I've never used iWeb, but it does seem like the product most in need of some attention. I guess we'll see what they decide to do with it whenever they get around to announcing the iLife updates. Nothing you mentioned has any need for Leopard per se, so I would hope they'd release it for Tiger as well if they do correct those shortcomings.

Based on murmurings and mooings on the pro sites, I reckon Apple will lose some customers to Avid, if they had originally come from Avid some time in the last 10 years. They're talking about going back to Avid, not to Avid.

I also reckon every kid who has used iMovie in the last few years will start using FCP X in about July. This is the next generation of video editors, and they will far outnumber Avid users. They will be making movies for web distribution. They will be flooding the film schools. They will also have the mad skillz (look at me, sounding like a teenager :D) to turn things over really quickly, something which is appreciated in today's editing environment.

Apple has built FCP X for people who have never used film and probably never will so the metaphor needed to go. Bye-bye bins, hello "smart folders". And a big hello to the do-deca-core, 8TB, 32GB Mac Pro everyone can now justify purchasing.

I agree on all points. Apple is walking a fine line between making the current pros happy and creating a project that will differentiate itself in way to inspire the post-film generation filmmakers (heck post video tape) generation filmmakers and thereby inspire sales.

I also think Apple has the advantage of the App store. While not free from hacking/pirating so far it looks more resistant that means it flexibility in pricing. For every copy of the software Adobe is selling how many dozens of copies are pirated? Currently the same thing could be said for FCP but I imagine that ration will turn in Apple's favor now. Avid is more immune but then Avid appeals to a different (perhaps dying) demographic.

    Funny.
I'm sure you could setup GSM repeaters and reprogram them to watch a person's cell phone as they walk around.

I really don't see the problem. Making a mountain out of a mole hill.

So what if you can slip it in someone's backpack.

I can buy radio direction finders and transmitters online and do the same.
Or I can buy GPS trackers, and also stick it on someone's car.
Those solutions are easier, more accurate, etc......and not terribly expensive.

I mean, they still need several Nike receivers in the perfect locations vs using regular direction finding or GPS tracking.....

    My thoughts exactly...

They had to put transmitters in locations they knew people with the Nike receivers would be running.

They had to know that a person with a Nike receiver would be running by.

They had to know when and where the person would be.

They had to know who the person was.

    All this before hand!

The Nike receivers do not broadcast your identity so if you dropped it and a squirrel picked it up they wouldn't even know that.

If the person wandered off track they couldn't locate them.

I just looked at the demo on video and laughed. What a contrived bit of crap. If you wanted a real challenge you would set up a test where you wouldn't know when, where, or who had the receiver before hand and then decide how worthwhile this kind of "tracking" method was. Besides, couldn't you do the same kind of thing with a wifi finder and any laptop with a wifi card? Sheesh! Leave it to the intellectually challenged media to try to sensationalize anything.

Jon Stewart, host of the comedy news show The Daily Show, offered an extended segment (http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-april-28-2010/appholes) on yesterday's show addressing the ongoing saga of the lost next-generation iPhone (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/04/27/criminal-investigation-of-lost-next-generation-iphone-spurred-by-apple-requests/) that was acquired by Gizmodo. The clip has been receiving a fair bit of attention today due to the show's popularity and Stewart's angle on the story taking Apple to task for its role in events.

Stewart's monologue, which kicked off the show, highlights many of the key events in the story thus far and sees Stewart professing his love for Apple gadgets but directly addressing Apple CEO Steve Jobs with his fears that Apple is becoming "The Man" in a reversal of the company's landmark '1984' commercial that introduced the Macintosh. Stewart draws a comparison to the reclusive Howard Hughes, suggesting that Jobs could be heading down the same road with the "paranoid corporate genius stuff" that saw Hughes engage in increasingly bizarre behavior. And unsurprisingly, Stewart also takes the opportunity to deliver a rant at AT&T's service, a popular target of discontent for iPhone owners.

Is it possible to hook a Mac Pro up to this, and if so will OS X recognize this much storage?

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/709613-REG/Dulce_Systems_978_0000_0_PRO_RXqp_Chassis_.html

I don't see any Mac drivers, so most likely not possible with OS X.
If you want Mac support, check out Promise.

If you want to save some money, build your own ZFS box based on OpenSolaris or FreeBSD.

I'll be back tomorrow morning, wandering around on the floor, but I think we're leaving at around 3 something.
