Not the first time when this topic has come up in other threads - my sympathies, piercing seems to be one of those issues that folks can really squick out on...

Now, neildmitchell - getting any work done at Zebra is brave. I tend to think of that store as a hole in the wall compared to Body Modifications or Black & Blue Tattoo in SF. Last time I was in there, I observed their tattoo guy smoking a cigarette and working on someone - great for the 1940s, but not so cool in 2005.
Ya, I went with a friend, who had piercings done there, so I thought it might be a reputable place. But not doing my research and stuff.... Oh well live and learn. I have posted a rant earlier somewhere in this thread about Slam Bad Piercers, Promote Good Piercers. I have also posted the rant on my myspace profile and the Piercing forum on myspace.

    So yes Zebra is bad,
Not knowledgable, no consultation, Used wrong jewlery ( A piercer should never pierce using the wrong jewelery, if they dont carry the correct jewlery they shouldnt pierce, and inform the subject), used cheap jewlery (Threads on outside), Sanitaion issues..... Since I have posted the name Zebra, everyone is coming out and telling their horror stories.

So I have been to Pierce Ink down in SJ (where I got the surface bar)
Took a few of their business cards, glued one to top my art supply box, also grabbed a few business cards from Fatty Zone(trained at Pierce Ink) in Mountian View, and have also glued it to my art supply box.(promoting the good) Currently carrying around their business cards inside, so if anyone wants to get pierced, I have at least two places that I trust that I can send them to.
I will swing by Body Modifications and Black & Blue Tattoo in SF. if you know that they are professional and reputable and do the same for them too.

Thanks for the linky. checked it out and have book marked it :)

I can. The iPod halo doesn't work without going hand in hand with the Apple Stores. If people are buying their iPods from shops that don't stock Macs, their opinions on Macs never change. If they buy an iPod from an Apple Store and see Macs all around doing everything their Windows computer can do and more, they become more open to buying a Mac next time a computer purchase comes round.

Apple need to open more international Stores if they want the worldwide share to increase.

I agree with this statement. It would be interesting to see the percentages in countries that have an Apple Store as opposed to those that don't.

I think another factor could be that a lot of new computers are being bought in China and India which are very cost concious cause the standard of living is still pretty low. I would bet Apple's share in these markets is under 1%.

Funny how Apple chooses to drop support for the only other app than iMovie that I even care about.

Where has Apple announced anything? This is nothing more than an Amazon placeholder for a book - such things have been shown to be very unreliable.

A significant amount of the news on this site (arguably, the most interesting news) is a result of the leaking of trade secrets.

So what's our view? "Give us all the interesting info, then arrest the people who leaked it to us!" ? Doesn't that seem a tiny bit... hypocritical?

Let's call things what they are....
Sure, lots of people out there realized they could magically "become a student" at some area school in order to receive an Apple discount on some hardware. It's deceitful - but if the practice was actually costing Apple money, you'd have seen them auditing all edu. purchases long ago.

The fact is, the edu. discount has generated quite a few new Apple customers who probably wouldn't have purchased one otherwise. And even at the discounted prices, they're high enough that Apple's still making a profit on those sales. Just not as large of one as they think they can usually get from the general public for the products otherwise.

I personally know a guy, for example, who bought a quad G5 tower using an educational discount, even though he's been done with school for quite some time. He had to scrape and beg to get the cash together for that system, even at the edu. price - and it involved selling his other Windows PCs too. He was convinced by the "Mac faithful" that it was a "better way" to do things, and at the edu. price, it was just *barely* possible for him to get it.

What good would it do Apple to punish him and lose a new customer forever, vs. give him a couple hundred bucks discount on a $3000+ machine?

Oh come on .. Well know why this was done. Just go read the post about when it was released. I could see this coming a mile away. Either a they would do this or b they would start doing the audits they talk about with educational purchases. There must have been atleast 50 people who blatantly posted about abusing the discount on a "public forum" and hundreds maybe thousands more who thougt of it. Lets say I owned a store and I saw a forum online where 50 plus people said they knew a way to rip off my store, do you think I would leave it vulnerable? I dont know ... maybe this is the reason or maybe it isnt but I think ts great they did it. Because now all the people who thought they could do this and thought its no different from walking in a store and walking out with out paying for an item, will have to mow a few more lawns or bag a few more grocerys and pay what the rest of the honest people out there will. I know I know I am sounding uber negative here but not nearly as negative as someone trying to justify stealing on a "public forum".

    Makes sense

would a bigger display in the future over come this issue?

I doubt it. I think the bigger issue is the size of the GPU to begin with, and it needing a full sized PCI slot to fit into the iMac . . . otherwise we'd be talking about a custom built GPU for the iMac and higher prices.

All in all, I'd rather have a mobile GPU and an express card slot if we were to ever get more room out of an iMac, or a new 30" iMac.

Let's see, I have a few dozen things I'd like to see:

    - (S)FTP-mountable volumes that you can WRITE to.
    - Faster spotlight. I really wouldn't mind, but they got me believing it'd be "instant", and really it's just "fast" right now.
    - A "calculate folder sizes" in the finder that acutally applies to all windows.
    - A few more display options for files in finder. That "Group By People" one in Spotlight is kinda clever. A large tile mode would be good.
    - Folders in the Finder that hint about what's inside. LIke a folder full o' word docs would have a word doc icon imposed on the folder.
    - A whole new Label system that is A) Not ugly and B) color customizable
    - A new dock, or at least a new dock feature! Or, at least avoiding the situation where an item dragged to the trash accidently gets a permanent home on the dock instead. The dock is, like, 10.1 technology
    - resolution independence, of course. I want to zoom out a bit.
    - an optional grey, translucent layer below the current app that makes all background windows a bit more in the background. I get confused if I can't see the traffic lights.

It did not go unnoticed to me that Apple is suing one cell phone related company and Nokia is suing SEVEN!

Apple is suing over smartphone details, and has comparatively little to sue over.

Nokia helped invent the basic cell phone. Huge difference.

No one could make a GSM phone without Nokia's patents.

    Kodak is suing FIVE!
And FOUR companies are suing Apple and HTC hasn't even countersued Apple! RIM is suing TWO!

What do the most suing companies have in common?

    DECLINING.

What else do they have in common? They're pioneers of the industry. They invented the very basic technology everyone else uses, not just the fluff on top. They heavily invested in the early days, while newcomers like Apple reap the benefits.

Apple is more popular right now partly because they had no legacy phones to stay compatible with, and could start with a blank UI and hardware slate. They skipped the hard parts. Doesn't mean they might not have to pay up for the privilege.

Not true. Soybean based biodiesel is made by pressing the beans to retrieve the oil. The soy bean pulp is a "byproduct" of soy biodiesel production. Conversely, the bean oil is a "byproduct" of soybean based foods. Hence, the two are quite complementary, and not at all exclusive.

I still wonder how much land would have to be devoted to soybeans to begin to produce enough biodiesel from it. Still, I don't doubt that biodiesel is going to be an important source of fuel going forward. But availability is always going to be much more limited than petro-fuels.

And yes, corn ethanol was a bad idea. George W. Bush liked it, that should be a warning sign right there.

Now this I agree with you on! Both my wife and I walk to work. We live in an urban area and both our offices are less than 1 mile from our home. Sadly though, many US cities are full of urban sprawl, and people who willingly live long distances from work and sit in long traffic lines twice each day.

I walk to work myself, I am about 1.3 miles from the office. I made sacrifices to relocate close to work, but I'd rather walk half an hour each way than drive. I still use my car often, but a walking commute, even for such a short distance, saves a surprising amount of fuel.

I've grown to dislike reading magazines on the iPad for several reasons.

    1. PPI of iPad too low
    2. Appification of magazines (why have an app for each?)
    3. Not passing along the cost savings saved in printing/shipping to us.

All I want is a subscription that cost less than the Amazon.com price, uses a common app (e.g. like Zinio) and a screen whose PPI is near the DPI of magazines.

It does not work here. EyeTV 3.2 running on my MBP, iPhone access enabled in settings, WiFi okay, but I am only getting this message ("cannot find EyeTV in network") like in the screenshot. Rebooted iPhone twice: NADA.

    Restart your mac.

/me is hoping Nokia and MS can get their &$?t together and come up with an alternative to Apple. Not that I would switch, but if I had to I'd rather go to another monolithic system than the fragmented mess that is the Android landscape

Exactly. Its called being a kid. Luckily, you'll age out of it. Until then, suck it up and get used to it.

Exactly, you're a child, a minor, a non-voter, you have no adult rights and the reason you're still at school is to learn...

If your IT admin who understand the network, administer the network and have to fix all the problems caused by students that don't know much at all, then they are well within their right (as adults, teachers, professionals) to do what they ned to to protect the investment in their infrastructure.

Consider it a learning experience, these people know more than you.

I'm sure if you ask nicely they'll give it back.

Tuesday at 3:00 works for me. I'm guessing most of us locals will have plenty of time to get to the Moscone Center after watching MR's Keynote coverage from home or work.

Good point about doing the "big" meeting more sooner than later. And there is a certain excitement in the hall on Tuesday that starts to fade a bit by Wednesday.

PS - I'm wearing my favorite shirt, so I'll be pretty easy to recognize...

Give me a break. I'm sure your "experience" is vast, and you know every person at Princeton.
I happen to have the displeasure of knowing a good many more than I'd like to, and I'm telling you there's no way that a full 45% of that student body are blue-blooded Mac users. Princetonians are a people lacking utterly in subtlety and charm, and even poorer in aesthetic intuition. They're the people who pose with upturned collars! I can't stress strongly enough: These people aren't Mac users. They're switcheurs.

That's awfully friendly. In the bay area (USA) we do nothing of the sort.
Yeah, it's not part of learning to drive per se (not until you get into Advanced Driving tests), but any decent driving instructor should at least mention it to his / her pupil.

Right! Back on topic. So, white iPhone 4...;)
